Overcoming Injuries

It was many weeks ago that I came home from a CrossFit workout feeling very sore.  Oh wait... that is every workout.  But some day in the past, I came home feeling I had really worked the hamstrings.  Of course that probably made me grin at the time because I seem to follow up every heavy deadlift day with a stellar run day.  But then on the next run, I still felt the soreness in the backs of my thighs.  In all likelihood, I shrugged it off as residual soreness, ran and went on about my busy life.  Then I did some more workouts and still felt the pain.  I ran some more, as I tend to do, and felt soreness during the runs and a little less bounce in my step.  Ugh...

Focus on the Important Stuff

Two short topics for today. Still working on the Endurance Cert writeup, so that will come later.

First is Boston. Amazing things happened at the Boston Marathon yesterday. It was exciting to follow. Go to Competitor Magazine for details if you missed the outcomes.
It is crazy to think I ran Boston 11 years ago with my second fastest marathon time. I thought a lot back to that time yesterday. While it was a decent finishing time, I can say that where I am right now is such a better place. I have a wonderful family with three awesome kids and a hard working husband. Running has become bigger than just myself and I run for more than my own interests. I run to serve the Lord, my family, sponsor, and of course my own sanity. I have found experiences running ultras that I cherish more than I can explain. All of this came after Boston. I might have been faster 11 years ago, but I was not the person I am today, and I am pleased with the present!

Second: this week is National Parks Week. I love our National Parks. They are special places we as a nation do not value enough. I used to live just outside Yosemite and can tell you that magical things happen inside that park, much more magical than Disneyland. I want to encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy our natural lands. Running is a great way to do it, but even if you drive to the bottom of Yosemite Falls and look up, just do it. Once I have a more flexible husband (in terms of schedules go) I plan to take our children to all the parks we can, hopefully in a fully decked out RV. This is totally not the Eco-friendly method I did as a kid, but that's what I want to do with three kids.
I'm pretty sure I don't actually have to tell those reading this that our Parks are great places. If you have spent any time outside breathing fresh air, you know it is good stuff. And I usually don't get on my environmentalist soap box, but here is a little one. There are a lot of competing interests for our national lands. What we see as beautiful trees, flowers, grasses and mountains, many others see as something very different. My senior thesis involved an in-depth look at land management for government owned lands, and I can tell you there are a lot of people out there that want to change how our lands are used, and logically following: how our lands look. Whether it be timber, grazing, recreation of the more invasive kind, or mining, hard pressing interest groups are competing for it. Ok, enough, you get the idea. I'm not writing to say any of these shouldn't go on at all, but that balance is key. Point is this: use our National Parks. Enjoy them, recreate in them, explore them, support them. If we don't, someone else might just snap them up.

Happy Earth Day on Friday. Go outside and enjoy it!
